THE BRONX - A sellout crowd at Yankee Stadium watched the New York Rangers rout the New Jersey Devils 7-3 in the first of two Stadium Series games in the Bronx.
The Devils set the tone with a fast-paced first period, notching the first goal and eventually taking a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. The Rangers responded with four unanswered goals in the second period, chasing Martin Brodeur in favor of Corey Schneider for the third period. Derek Stepan notched the final tally on a penalty shot, leading to the 7-3 win.
The afternoon game was attended by over 50,000 fans in freezing temperatures. Following an hour delay due to sun glare, the temperature was 20 degrees when the puck dropped.
The Rangers remained in second place in the Metropolitan Division. The Devils are currently behind Philadelphia, Columbus and Carolina for the third and final playoff spot in the division.
The Rangers return to Yankee Stadium on Wednesday to face off against the New York Islanders.
