NEWARK - A new list of some of the most dangerous toys still available in stores has been released, and some parents may be surprised at what's on it.
The New Jersey Public Interest Research Group says consumers should be wary. Many parents may not recognize dangers unless they do some research before shopping.
Some toys, like the Loving Family Outdoor BBQ, had small parts that can cause choking.
NJPIRG says the Leap Frog Lil Phone Pal was laboratory-tested and it's loud enough to hurt a small child's ears.
The group says it is seeing a lot more toxins in toys, including lead and cadmium.
"I have two twin girls," says Tashell Adams, of Newark. "They are one. And everything they put in their mouths. As soon as you turn your eyes, there they go."
A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pencil case was found to contain high levels of the metal cadmium, NJPIRG researchers found. They say it was not subject to the same safety standards because it's not classified as a toy.
Parents are advised to check posted lists of dangerous toys before making purchases.
