SOUTH PLAINFIELD - The city of South Plainfield has announced a new truck route on Hollywood Avenue.

The bypass route will link Interstate 287 to local industrial roads, removing heavy truck traffic from residential streets.

Some of the land being used for the project is protected wetlands, and environmentalists say cutting into it can be bad for the community.

Dana Patterson, of the Edison Wetlands Association, says altering the swampy areas could result in the shifting of water and a risk of flooding.

The mayor of South Plainfield says his current plan keeps environmental impact low by using only 1 acre of wetlands to reroute the roads.
