NEW BRUNSWICK - Robert Barchi is set to become the 20th president of Rutgers. He will be the first medical doctor to hold the position.
Dr. Barchi is a neurologist with a long academic history. He grew up in the Westfield and Trenton areas and says he wants New Jersey's university to earn more respect for its research and education.
Barchi is set to take over just as Gov. Chris Christie wants Rutgers to establish a medical school. Christie also wants to merge Rutgers-Camden with Rowan University. Christie wants the merger approved by July, two months before Barchi starts the job. Barchi is resigning as president of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia to accept the $650,000-per-year position at Rutgers.
