BELMAR - The Garden State is among the top five smoggiest states in the nation. Smog can trigger asthma and cause difficulty breathing, especially with repeated exposure. News 12 New Jersey took a look at what parts of the state ranked the worst.

The New Jersey-Philadelphia suburbs rank as the smoggiest in the state, with 29 smog days last year, according to EPA data analyzed by Environment New Jersey.

The Monmouth-Ocean region had 18 bad air quality days.

The Middlesex/Somerset-Hunterdon region had 17 days of unhealthy air and 15 air quality alerts were issued for Trenton.

Preliminary data from this year shows a real problem in Newark with 27 days of air quality alerts this summer, with seven of them being "red alert" days.
