EDISON - New Jersey residents are preparing for the sweltering heat expected this weekend.

Some people told News 12 New Jersey that they will limit outdoor activities, and if they go outside it will probably involve doing something in the water.

"I go in my pool. I drink lots of water. I'll just lay on the floor with my dog, pet her and, yeah, I stay inside," says Colin Sabie, of Point Pleasant Beach.

The National Weather Service issued excessive heat watches through Sunday evening in anticipation of temperatures well over 90 degrees. News 12 New Jersey Meteorologist Dave Curren says that all New Jersey residents should use caution if they venture out this weekend.

“Tornadoes and hurricanes get the biggest scary weather headlines, however heat is the number one weather-related killer,” he says. “Your body temperature is 98.6 degrees. When the outside air temperatures or heat index exceeds 95 degrees, the body is working even harder to try and cool off.”

Curren says that people should remember to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water or even eating such foods as watermelon, celery or strawberries.

Temperatures are expected to be above 90 degrees for most of next week. Many municipalities have opened cooling centers for anyone who does not have a place to escape the heat.

Meteorologists say that temperatures so far for 2016 have been the hottest on record.
