HOLMDEL - Municipalities across the state are reminding residents to steer clear of skating on frozen ponds and lakes unless they have been clearly marked as safe to do so.

Authorities say to look for signs that warn you to "stay off."

The lake at Holmdel Park is currently safe to skate on.

Park manager Mark Borchert says officials check the thickness of the ice multiple times a day to make sure it is at least 4 to 5 inches thick, and that it is important to pay attention to those signs. "You want to go where you know how thick the ice is," Borchert says. "It's monitored and checked regularly, and it's safe for skating."

Falling through frozen ponds or lakes could be deadly, Borchert says.
