TRENTON - New Jersey's economy lost 7,500 jobs in April and the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.7 percent from 4.4 percent in March.

New data released Thursday showed most of the declines coming in the private sector, with companies shedding 10,800 jobs. The public sector grew by 3,300.

April is the second straight month that the unemployment rate ticked up. New Jersey's unemployment rate is below the national level of 5 percent.

The Republican Christie administration says revised March data show employers added 4,700 more jobs than previously calculated for a total increase of 22,000 jobs in March.

The administration says March was the best month for job growth in more than 20 years.
