NEWARK - New Jersey's two U.S. senators are touting two gun control measures that are due to be voted on Monday night.

Democrats Bob Menendez and Cory Booker made their plea during a rally in Newark. They were joined by Democratic Reps. Albio Sires and Donald Payne Jr., gun safety groups and advocacy organizations and others.

The senators backed measures to expand gun background checks and to keep people on a government terrorism watch list or other suspected terrorists from buying guns. They said the measures were common sense, not extreme or radical proposals.

Booker was among several Democrats who took part in a nearly 15-hour Senate filibuster last week that addressed congressional inaction on gun violence. He told the crowd in Newark that "we're speaking out for those who have been silenced by gunfire."
