EDISON - Plans to build a wall between the United States and Mexico were a major part of President Donald Trump’s campaign.

Several New Jersey construction companies are hoping to be involved now that the Department of Homeland Security has offered applications for designs and opened the bidding for contractors to help build the wall.

Manuel Cotelo operates Ameristar Contracting Group in Waretown. He says that he deals in federal contracts so he believes he holds an advantage over the hundreds that have applied nationwide.

“I follow the money, wherever the jobs are,” he says. "We know what their expectations are and we have a team of skilled people than can accomplish that."

Trump says that he wants a wall that is 30 feet tall and 2,000 miles long. He says its purpose is to protect national security.

The wall could cost $21 billion to build, which would be a large payday for dozens of contractors and subcontractors.

Plans for the walls have been met with much criticism due to the cost and racial undertones. Consulting engineer Marshall Robert says that in a case like this he likes to leave politics behind.

“That’s exactly how I’m treating it,” he says. “It’s a business opportunity.”

The deadline is for applications is March 20. Vendors and contractors will learn in April whether or not they got the job.
