EDISON - The highest concentration of flu in New Jersey appears to be in a stretch between Edison and Newark, according to new data being collected by a software and mapping company.
Software company ESRI combines data from the Centers of Disease Control with real-time posts from social media sites. The result is a snapshot of how many people are complaining about flu-like symptoms and where they are located.
Officials at the company say the type of information collected from social media is invaluable.
"You can see where the flu is relative to vulnerable populations and figure out where to put new shipments of flu vaccine," said Chris Thomas from ESRI's headquarters in California.
