WASHINGTON - The Defense Department has identified a Toms River native along with eight other American troops killed in the worst coalition helicopter crash in Afghanistan in four years.

Petty Officer 3rd Class (SEAL) Denis C. Miranda, 24, was among the troops killed in the crash. Miranda was assigned to an East Coast-based SEAL Team.

Two other sailors were Navy SEALs, while the fourth was assigned to the Naval Special Warfare unit. The five soldiers were from the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, at Fort Campbell, Ky.

The Department of Defense says the troops were killed on Sept. 21 during combat operations in the Zabul province, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
