CAPE MAY COUNTY - The storm that uprooted trees and knocked out power to thousands of people in southern New Jersey Tuesday was caused by a microburst.

The National Weather Service confirmed the storm’s classification Wednesday afternoon. According to the agency, the winds from the storm topped out at 70 mph.

By Wednesday night, utility crews were still working to restore power to some customers, mainly in Cape May County. At the peak of the storm, there were around 34,000 people without power.

The storm caused road flooding, tossed around boats and other debris, and brought down power lines.

Cape May County was briefly under a tornado warning as severe thunderstorms packing heavy rain and strong winds swept through Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic, Burlington, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean and Salem counties.
