EDISON - Drivers across the country are being asked to participate in a daylong effort to prevent motor vehicle-related deaths.

The "Put the Brakes on Fatalities" campaign is designed to remind drivers about staying safe on the roadways while encouraging motorists to obey traffic laws.

Last year in New Jersey, 627 people lost their lives in car crashes.

Police departments across the state say they will increase patrols in an effort to combat motor vehicle law violators.
