NEWARK - Friends, family members and top New Jersey officials are honoring an Army National Guardsman from Newark who was killed Wednesday in Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Jorge Oliveira died when insurgents attacked his unit with an explosive device, officials say. He was serving a yearlong tour in Afghanistan.

Oliveira was a graduate of East Side High School and Essex County College. The flags were at half-staff at the Essex County Sheriff's Department today. Oliveira had worked there on a fugitive squad, helping to track down some of Essex County's most dangerous criminals.

Oliveira had previously done tours in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 113th Infantry Regiment, 50th Brigade Combat Team, out of Riverdale, N.J.
