ENGLEWOOD - The nation's oldest Medal of Honor recipient has died.

Nick Oresco, of Bayonne, was a World War II veteran and lifelong New Jersey resident. He came to Englewood Hospital last weekend after breaking his leg during a fall.

The 96-year-old underwent surgery Friday evening, but did not survive. An impromptu motorcade took Oresco from the hospital after his passing, with police and firefighters saying it was the least they could do.

For nearly a week, Oresco had been receiving gifts and well wishes in his hospital room, along with more than 100 visitors. Some even visited hours before his surgery and spoke about what he and his Medal of Honor meant to them.

Oresco has no surviving relatives, but his extended family of military brethren will make their way to New Jersey for his funeral.

Arrangements are still in the works.
