JERSEY CITY - A man who was trying to elude police custody, after he allegedly killed the mother of his child, is in critical condition after he fell almost 40 feet.

Nathan Williams, 36, broke both legs and his hip when he jumped off Route 280 and landed near First and Orange streets in Newark.

Friends and neighbors in Jersey City are still trying to come to terms with the violent death of 33-year-old Marilyn Albizu.

Homicide investigators combed her Old Bergen Road home for evidence.

Authorities say police had been there earlier in the day on a report of a domestic dispute between the two, but Albizu declined to get a restraining order against Williams.

Hours later, police returned to do a welfare check and found Albizu's body. Police put out a bulletin to be on the lookout for Williams.

Newark police say they spotted the suspect at Hawthorne Avenue and Girard Place just before 11 p.m., but he fled from a traffic stop.

The chase ended in the North Ward with a desperate leap that landed Williams in the hospital and in even more trouble with the law.

An autopsy revealed Albizu had been strangled.
