Mt. Arlington police officer killed by alleged drunken driver

MOUNT ARLINGTON - The community of Mount Arlington is mourning the loss of one of their police officers, who was killed by an alleged drunken driver early this morning.

The incident occurred on Route 80 in Roxbury just after midnight. Michael Cassella, of Howell, is accused of crashing his car head-on into a patrol car being driven by Officer Joseph Wargo.

Cassella was arrested overnight and charged with DWI, aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide, speeding and reckless driving.

Wargo, who was pronounced dead at a hospital, was the president of his local police union. Police say the suspect has been arrested before on drug charges
