PARAMUS - OSHA officials are investigating what caused an MRI machine to explode at the Oradell Animal Hospital in Paramus Friday afternoon.
The explosion happened at around 12 p.m. at the hospital on Winters Avenue. Workers were repairing the MRI machine when it suddenly exploded, injuring three of them.
“I was at the opposite side of the building and I felt it shake,” says Assistant Director John De Vries. “It felt like a helicopter had crashed.”
The helium inside the MRI machine started to leak, prompting Hazmat crews to respond.
The injured workers were taken to the hospital. At least one of them had critical injuries.
All of the animals were accounted for. Staff at the hospital had to finish surgery on a dog out in the parking lot while emergency crews secured the scene.
The hospital is working on generator power while OSHA continues its investigation.
The hospital's Fort Lee location will be able to take care of the more critical animal cases while repairs are made in Paramus.
