NEWARK - A mother and her roommate were arraigned today on murder charges in the case of an 8-year-old girl who was found dead of severe malnutrition and an untreated fracture in her Irvington home.
The child's mother, Christiana Ovilde, also known as Krisla Rezireksyon, faces 38 charges. Her roommate, Myriam Janvier, faces 37 charges. Both appeared at the Essex County Courthouse today.
Authorities say Christiana Glenn died in May 2011 of severe malnutrition and an untreated fracture. Her two injured and emaciated younger siblings were taken from the home alive. Investigators say they were found chained to a radiator.
Both Ovilde and Janvier pleaded not guilty. They will remain at Essex County Jail until their next trial date.
The manager of the state's child abuse hotline was fired after it was revealed that a call about the children's condition was received and dismissed nine days before Christiana's death.
