NEWARK - The mother of one of the two teens killed in Newark on Christmas joined a Newark councilman to call for an end to gang violence in the city.

Zainee Hailey, 13, and Kasson Morman, 15, were killed outside of a home on Schley Street Christmas night. Police have not confirmed whether the killings were gang-related.

Alnisa Reed, Morman’s mother, was joined by South Ward councilman and mayoral candidate Ras Baraka during a press conference Sunday afternoon. The mayoral hopeful was principal at Central High School, where Morman was a student.

Newark's new mayor Luis Quintana pledged to get more police on the street and called on the state and federal governments to pledge more money for the city.

A march from Lincoln Park to City Hall is planned for Monday at noon to protest the ongoing violence that has plagued the city over the past year.

Participants will be carrying garbage bags in remembrance of Zainee Hailey, who was apparently taking out the trash at the time of her shooting death.
