Most work to halt on Route 35 over summer

LAVALLETTE - (AP) - Drivers heading to the Jersey shore will find a major road that was damaged by Superstorm Sandy ready for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
    
Transportation Commissioner James Simpson was in Lavallette Monday to announce all Route 35 travel lanes will be open for the summer.
    
Some reconstruction work along the 12½-mile stretch of highway will be halted beginning Thursday and will not resume until after Labor Day.
    
Work on other sections will be suspended beginning on June 13.
    
Reconstruction along side streets in some towns will continue through the summer.
    
Utility crews, who don't work for the DOT, may be replacing poles or gas lines.
    
The $265 million project involves rebuilding the highway from Bay Head to Berkeley after parts were heavily damaged by Sandy.
