MONTVILLE - School officials in Montville say they are concerned about recently reactivated power lines next to a ball field.

PSE&G powered up the lines two months earlier than expected, and didn't tell administrators.

The lines run next to a ball field behind Lazar Middle School. They've been there for years, but had not been energized.
Officials are concerned about the possible health risks of playing near the lines. "Our board of education, because of the potential [danger], wanted to close the fields at that point in time," says Superintendent Paul Fried.

PSE&G says it had originally intended to activate the lines in June, but told the school it was ahead of schedule.

In a settlement, the company is giving the district $1.5 million to build a new ball field away from the power lines.
