Monmouth County sheriff's officers begin carrying tasers to reduce use of lethal force
FREEHOLD - Monmouth County sheriff's officers are now the latest in New Jersey law enforcement to be armed with tasers.
Eight officers have been trained and certified to use the four devices just purchased by the department.
The stun guns can stop a suspect by temporarily crippling them with a jolt of electricity.

Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden says the addition of tasers may help reduce the use of lethal force.
"It may have a better outcome for the suspect and the officer," Golden says. "No officer wants to dispatch their weapon, their duty weapon, but if that time comes and there's an alternative, because there is no weapon on the other side, this may be one of those alternatives to use."
The Sheriff's Office is the first law enforcement agency in Monmouth County to be equipped with tasers.
