MIDDLETOWN - Drivers appeared to heed warnings from Middletown officials to stay off the streets, leaving only snowplows out Tuesday night.

The few drivers who were out Tuesday were taking it slow. Route 35 in Monmouth County was all but deserted by drivers wary of treacherous conditions created by the latest blast of winter.

"Once I came over the bridge on the Parkway, I noticed it was considerably worse on this side of the bridge," said Ken Carroll, of Middletown. "When I got on 35, it was very slippery."

Jeff Robertson, of Middletown, said traffic was moving at 3 mph on the hills up into the highlands before sanders came out. "People were all over the grass,” he says. “Trucks were just weaving, taking two lanes just to get up the hill."
