PERTH AMBOY - Modern science is being used to preserve a historic tree.

The Department of Environmental Protection is trying to save the historic English elm tree that has stood watch over Perth Amboy for about 200 years.

The tree, which sits on the grounds of Perth Amboy City Hall, has already outlived its lifespan by at least 75 years, so special care is being taken to preserve it.

The Forestry Service is also gathering seeds and samples from the tree in order to study it and plant more just like it. The seed samples will be shipped to a laboratory where they will be frozen and preserved for at least 100 years.
