LAKEWOOD - A toddler who went missing from her Lakewood home has been found dead in a nearby septic tank.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office says police were dispatched to the East Spruce Street yesterday after being contacted by Marina Matias, who reported that she could not find her 2-year-old daughter.

Authorities have identified the child as Jeni Castro.

Authorities are still investigating how the toddler wound up in the septic tank, but they say it appears to be a tragic accident and there is no indication of foul play.

Lakewood police say the 2-year-old was found in the underground sewage tank at around 7:30 p.m. Authorities say she may have fallen through a hole into the tank, which is used for processing waste.

The discovery of her body ended a roughly three-hour search by township police, an Ocean County Sheriff's Department canine unit and a state police helicopter.
