TRENTON - Millions in state aid is on its way to New Jersey's public schools. Much of the aid is directed toward the state's urban districts, but suburban districts may benefit too.

Last year's brutal economy meant budget cuts for schools in urban districts as well as wealthier suburban districts, such as Metuchen. With almost all its aid gone, the district froze salaries and all but eliminated its maintenance budget.

This week Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) announced next year's allocations for school aid and Metuchen gets back about a third of what it lost.

Democrats point out that most of the districts are still below where they were two years ago and the state's poorest districts, including Newark and Elizabeth, only got their money back because the state Supreme Court demanded it.
