Mill Town first-grader gives big gift for kids in need

MILL TOWN - Gene Waddy is 5 years old and just had his first haircut. The first-grader grew his locks about 2 feet long in order to donate it to kids in need.

"I'm donating my hair so that other people, other sick people, can feel good about themselves," he said.

Waddy's hair was donated to "Locks of Love," a non-profit organization that provides hair pieces to children suffering from chronic and terminal illness.

Gene, his mom and dad were inspired to donate hair by a family friend whose 4-year-old daughter had cancer and lost her hair and eventually her life.

But even the untimely death of the 4-year-old didn't stop Gene from wanting to help other children -- he donated enough hair to make two wigs.
