Michael Benkowski arrested in alleged arson of Newark mayoral candidate Ras Baraka's campaign bus

A man suspected in the February vandalism and arson of a Newark mayoral campaign bus has been arrested. (4/4/14)

NEWARK - A man suspected in the February vandalism and arson of a Newark mayoral campaign bus has been arrested.

Candidate Ras Baraka says the bus was not only burned, but gas was thrown onboard and sugar was put in the gas tank.

Michael Benkowski, 43, of Newark, was arrested by prosecutor's detectives and the FBI in an apartment on Broad Street in Newark. He was taken into custody without incident.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly says Benkowski has been charged with third-degree arson, third-degree criminal mischief and third-degree burglary. Additional charges are possible in the case.

Benkowski is being held in the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark on $100,000 bail.
