WEST LONG BRANCH - Months after a tragic accident claimed the lives of two Spotswood High School sweethearts, loved ones honored their memory during a fundraiser Sunday morning.

Friends and family gathered at Kessler Field at Monmouth University to participate in the memorial walk for Nicole Surace and her boyfriend Jeffrey Szatkowski, who were killed in a car crash in East Brunswick during the Thanksgiving holiday.

About 300 people participated in the walk around the track.

Kelly Parks, the walk’s organizer, says 100 percent of the proceeds from the event are going toward raising funds for a $25,000 endowment scholarship in Surace’s name at the university.

She hopes to raise the full amount by the end of the year.

"I wanted to create a positive thing out of such a tragedy," Parks told News 12.
