EAST RUTHERFORD - The Meadowlands Racetrack has come up with a way to pick NFL games, even in New Jersey, where sports betting is illegal.
But one company is betting that they've come up with a game that could be just as popular.
The Victory Sports Bar opens at the racetrack later this month with 11 huge television screens to watch sports.
A new app, called the Football Challenge, allows fans to pick games and earn points. Owners hope it will help fill the seats, week after week, since you have to be on the property to play it.
"We want people to be in the building," says Justin Horowitz, spokesperson for Meadowlands Racing and Entertainment. "It's a facility we spent $100 million on and its a good way to drive traffic here."
New gamers receive 1,000 points when they sign up. Players use the points to pick games. The more games those teams win, the more points pile up. The person with the most points each week gets a $2,000 prize.
"Using points there's no money wagered," Horowitz says. "No money involved except for the prize money."
The contest is in full compliance with New Jersey laws.
