Mayor: Murdered Jersey City Police Officer Melvin Santiago to be posthumously promoted, honored


Officers lined up at attention as Santiago's flag-draped body was taken on a gurney from Jersey City Medical Center and loaded onto an ambulance.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop has announced that Officer Melvin Santiago, who was killed in the line of duty Sunday, will be posthumously promoted to the rank of detective.

Santiago will also receive the department’s Medal of Honor.

The promotion and honor ceremony will take place at the officer’s wake on Thursday evening.
