JERSEY CITY - Several recent mass casualty training drills likely saved many lives after a New Jersey Transit train crashed at the Lackawanna Train Station in Hoboken Thursday morning, according to a spokesperson for Jersey City Medical Center.

The hospital held at least two training drills within the past year to practice dealing with a large number of patients after a disaster.

Pascack Valley Line train No. 1614, en route from Spring Valley, New York, crashed into the Hoboken station around 8:45 a.m.

Officials say 114 people were injured in the crash. That includes the train’s engineer, Thomas Gallagher.

Most of the injured were taken to Jersey City Medical Center to be treated. About two dozen patients were taken to Hoboken University Hospital. By Thursday evening, all but about 13 patients were released from Jersey City Medical. The remaining patients were said to be in guarded condition.

Hoboken resident Fabiola Bittar de Kroon was killed in the crash. The 34-year-old was not a passenger. She was struck by debris while standing on the train platform.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash. Investigators are expected to remain on the scene for the next seven to 10 days.
