NEWARK - Friends of a woman who died while taking a nap in her car are remembering someone devoted to her work and her idol.
Maria Fernandes, 32, worked multiple jobs to get by and was planning on taking time off on Friday to celebrate the birthday of pop star Michael Jackson.
Fernandes was a familiar face to people who frequented or worked at Newark Penn Station. She worked at the Dunkin' Donuts there, and three other jobs also.
Elizabeth police say Fernandes had pulled into a parking lot on Route 1 & 9 to take a nap. Investigators believe she died from a mixture of carbon monoxide and gasoline fumes. She carried an extra container in case she ran out of gas while rushing between jobs.
The longtime Michael Jackson fan was part of a group called "Legacy of Love."
This Friday, Fernandes was planning to celebrate the King of Pop's birthday in New York's Central Park. Friends say they plan to hold a memorial for her.
Fernandes lived in the Ironbound section of Newark and co-workers don't believe she had family nearby.
