MAPLEWOOD - The town of Maplewood is honoring its own Olympic medal winner, Ibtihaj Muhammad.
Muhammad earned a bronze medal in fencing, becoming the first Muslim-American to compete while wearing a traditional hijab.
Many people from across the area lined the streets Saturday to snap pictures and grab autographs of the small-town hero who made it big last month in Rio.
"I tell people all the time that I'm just a girl from Jersey who decided to work hard and I tell kids all the time that they can easily have what I have if they're willing to work hard for it," she says. "I remember being told that there were things I couldn't do because I was a girl, because of my faith, because of my race, and I just want people to know that literally I just decided to work hard."
Muhammad graduated from Columbia High School and was the coach of the fencing team.
She says her love of sports began at a very young age, and her desire to be the best came from competing against her siblings.
