Maplewood holds meeting after two students bring guns to school (6/9/15)

MAPLEWOOD - Hundreds of parents, teachers and students attended a town hall meeting held in Maplewood Monday after two students allegedly brought weapons into school over the course of two days.

At the meeting, school officials told parents that most of the discipline problems at the middle school are caused by only a handful of students.

A mother at the meeting called on parents to keep their guns away from their children.

Last Wednesday, a 13-year-old seventh-grader was arrested for bringing a loaded Glock 9mm handgun to the middle school. The gun was reportedly armed with hollow point bullets, according to police.

A day later at Columbia High School, a ninth-grader was arrested for having a knife and an airsoft pistol which fires BBs.

Police say the two incidents were unrelated.

The 13-year-old student will not be coming back to school, officials announced at the meeting.

After the incidents parents complained that the district did not provide enough information in a timely manner.

The district billed the forum as a way of ensuring a safe climate in schools.
