MAPLE SHADE - Maple Shade has blocked a medical marijuana dispensary from opening at its proposed location .

The zoning board was the first in the state to hold a public hearing on the use of a building to legally sell medical marijuana.

Compassionate Sciences Alternative Treatment Center made its pitch Wednesday night to the board in Maple Shade in Burlington County.

The treatment center is one of six New Jersey awarded a license in the state to sell marijuana to patients.

Zoning board officials said that it would be better to have the facility close to a hospital rather than at the proposed site along Route 73, near exit 4 of the New Jersey Turnpike. AP wire services contributed to this report.
