NEWARK - A man was shot and killed outside of a Newark funeral service Wednesday afternoon.

Police say a funeral at Churchman Funeral Home on 13th Avenue was letting out and that the coffin was being loaded into the hearse at around noon when shots were fired.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has identified the victim as Jahid Devlin, 22. He was taken to University Hospital in Newark and pronounced dead.

Witnesses reported seeing the man lying on the ground outside the funeral home. Police say he was shot five times in the head and twice in the chest.

Police say the funeral, was for a man in his 40s who had died of natural causes. The man was the victim's uncle.

Investigators believe Devlin was targeted. Police say they have not yet made an arrest.
