NEW BRUNSWICK - A man was killed in a shootout involving police officers in New Brunswick Saturday, authorities say.
Diahlo Grant, 27, was shot around 1:30 a.m. on Somerset Street in New Brunswick after exchanging gunfire with officers from Franklin Township, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.
News 12 is told that Grant was walking home from a relative's house when he was involved in a confrontation with police.
According to prosecutors, Grant was first spotted on Home Street by officers who then followed him onto Somerset Street. Gunfire was exchanged after they crossed into New Brunswick.
Friends of Grant say he was shot five times and eventually died from his injuries at University Hospital.
"One of the officers began performing cardio pulmonary resuscitation," Prosecutor Andrew Carey said in a statement.
The Attorney General's Office is taking over the investigation because officers were involved.
Authorities say Grant was wanted for violation of probation for a drug charge and for failing to pay child support.
