Man killed by lightning strike in Demarest

DEMAREST - Police in Demarest have confirmed that a man who was struck by lightning yesterday has died.

According to police, the man was watching a relative's soccer practice at North Valley Regional High School when he was struck. He was flown to Hackensack Medical Center where he later died.

About 100 students had to be evacuated from the area, and many others had to be treated for "emotional shock," according to police and reports.

More lightning strikes and severe weather is expected this evening. Bergen, Passaic, Essex, Union and Hudson counties are all under a tornado watch.
