GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP - A man being processed on a domestic violence charge grabbed a gun and shot and injured three officers this morning at the Gloucester Township police station in Camden County, according to authorities.
Police Chief Harry Earle says that Eddie Jones III, 39, of Willingboro Township, was arrested for allegedly stalking the home of a former girlfriend. Jones identified himself as a New Jersey Department of Corrections officer. Responding officers learned during a field investigation that he was employed as a civilian communications officer, not a sworn corrections officer.
While being processed at the Gloucester Township police station, officials say Jones attacked officer Ruth Burns while his handcuffs were briefly removed, striking her in the head and taking her firearm. Jones proceeded to fire at officers before he was killed by multiple gunshots.
Sgt. James Garber was shot multiple times and underwent emergency surgery; his life was saved by a bulletproof vest. Burns and Sgt. Kevin Thine were also shot. All are expected to recover.
