Man in stolen car wounded in police-involved shooting

NEWARK - Newark police confirm that an officer opened fire earlier tonight on a man who was in a stolen car in the 300 Block of Mount Prospect Avenue.

At a news conference, authorities said a woman approached the car after she recognized it was her vehicle, a Volkswagon SUV. It was stolen yesterday in Jersey City. Officials say the 44-year-old man sped off, ran over another woman and dragged her, prompting the officer to open fire.

The woman who was struck is reported to be in stable condition. The man in the car was shot in the head and is in critical condition. His name is not being released at this time.
