UNION TOWNSHIP - A Union Township man is facing three counts of attempted murder in connection to an attack this morning in Union. The Union County Prosecutor's Office tells News 12 New Jersey that Morgan Mesz, 25, attacked three people with a hatchet in a Union Township backyard in a random and unprompted attack. Police say Mesz stabbed two women, Carolyn Vonnell, 53, and Barbara Perrine, 50, several times. Both remain hospitalized in critical condition.
Hernan Agudelo, 33, told News 12 New Jersey that he heard cries for help, ran into his neighbor's yard and began hitting him with a baseball bat. He says he was then able to pin Mesz to the ground until police arrived.
Agudelo says when he confronted Mesz, he was rambling incoherently about God, Jesus and the 12 Apostles. Prosecutors say Mesz has since undergone a psychiatric exam.
Agudelo suffered non-life threatening stab wounds during the struggle and was treated at University Hospital in Newark.
Bail for Mesz has been set at $1.5 million.
