SEASIDE HEIGHTS - Police have apprehended a man who climbed atop the wreckage of the Jet Star roller coaster off Casino Pier in Seaside Heights.

Chris Angulo, of Lavallette, walked from the top of the coaster and hopped into a police boat. He was handcuffed, walked through the surf and escorted to a police car on the beach.

Angulo's mother told News 12 New Jersey he climbed aboard the ruins of the roller coaster in an effort to call attention to Sandy recovery.

The Jet Star was swept away from Casino Pier during Hurricane Sandy. The steel remnants have become one of the iconic images of the storm.

Several people called News 12 New Jersey this afternoon to offer to pay for Angulo's bail. It not yet clear what, if any, charges the man faces.
