MIDDLETOWN - The man charged with stabbing a Keansburg woman more than a dozen times at the Bed Bath & Beyond store in Middletown appeared in court this afternoon.

Police say 19-year-old Tyrik Haynes said very little in the Freehold courtroom, giving just yes and no answers to the judge as he heard the charges against him.

Haynes is accused of stabbing 29-year-old Kerri Dalton of Keansburg as she shopped in the store with her young child yesterday afternoon.

Police say Dalton was conscious when she was brought to Jersey Shore Medical Center. She remains in critical but stable condition.

Haynes has been charged with attempted murder and weapons offenses, according to the prosecutor's office.

He was already facing charges for allegedly burning a cat to death on Christmas Eve in the township. According to the Monmouth County SPCA police, the incident wasn't an indictable offense initally because investigators could not find the animal's body.

The body of the cat was found about a week and a half ago, leaving many wondering why charges against Haynes weren't upgraded.
