METUCHEN - A man has been charged following a "swatting" incident at a Middlesex County gym.

According to a NJ Advance Media report, a caller reported Tuesday morning that the Crossfit gym on Jersey Avenue in Metuchen was being taken hostage. Police officers arrived to find that the gym was closed and there was no hostage situation.

Hector Rivera was charged with causing false public alarm, unlawful use of 911, and hindering arrest in connection with the swatting, the report said.

The 23-year-old was found holding a cellphone near the gym. Police said Rivera's phone had recently dialed the Metuchen Police Department non-emergency line.
