TOMS RIVER - The man accused of gunning down a Lakewood police officer in the line of duty made his first appearance in court today.
Jahmell Crockam is charged with murder and weapons offenses in the death of 27-year-old Patrolman Christopher Matlosz on Friday.
Crockman was arrested Sunday at an apartment complex in Camden after a statewide manhunt. The motive for the deadly shooting remains unclear.
Authorities said Matlosz and the teen were speaking when Crockam suddenly pulled a gun and fired three shots at the officer.
Crockam was wanted for possession of an illegal rifle and hollow-point bullets at the time, according to authorities. It's unclear whether the officer knew that.
The slain officer's fiancee, mother and more than a thousand community members and police officers attended a candlelight vigil last night in Lakewood in honor of Matlosz.
