Man charged after toddler nearly drowns

PARK RIDGE - Authorities in Bergen County say a toddler nearly drowned in a hotel pool while the man who was supposed to be watching him was under the influence of drugs.

Peter Clark, 32, of Bogota, faces several charges, including aggravated assault, drug charges and child endangerment. Clark, an acquaintance of the child's mother, was watching the 20-month-old boy Sunday while she was in the hotel with another child.

Debbi Katcher told News 12 New Jersey she was near the pool when she noticed the child floating face down. Clark didn't respond when bystanders told him the boy was struggling, so they pulled the boy from the water. Karcher then immediately began administering CPR. After a short while, she said the boy began coughing.

The toddler was taken to a nearby hospital, but further details on his condition weren't disclosed.
