BAYONNE - An "al-Qaida sympathizer" accused of plotting to bomb government buildings in New York City also planned on targeting the police headquarters building in Bayonne.

Public Safety Director Jason O'Donnell says the Bayonne Police Department is working with the New York Police Department and other agencies involved in connection with the continuing investigation.

O'Donnell urged people in Bayonne to remain vigilant. "If something doesn't seem right, it should be reported to the police at 201-858-6900 so that they can take appropriate action," O'Donnell said in a news release today.

People in Bayonne tell News 12 New Jersey that they can't believe their city's police headquarters was apparently on a terror hit list. According to investigators, there has been no word on why Bayonne was on his radar.

Jose Pimentel, of Manhattan, was described by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who announced his arrest yesterday, as "a 27-year-old al-Qaida sympathizer" who was motivated by terrorist propaganda and resentment of U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Police say he was under investigation for at least a year.

AP wire services contributed to this report.
